IIT Madras to admit MS, PhD applicants all-year round
Chennai: As per the new admission process announced by the IIT Madras, the students now can enrol themselves throughout the year in its M.S. and PhD research programmes.
“Admission to the research programme for PhD and M.S. is open throughout the academic year from July 2017 to June 2018,” IIT Madras announced on its website. As per the earlier admission process, the institute used to admit students in the two phases in July and December. “We felt it was better to continue with the admission process throughout the year, which will give a lot of flexibility to the students in applying to us. As soon as they get a fellowship or acquire additional qualification they can apply and need not wait for six months,” said A.K. Mishra, dean-academic research, IIT Madras.
“The applications will be sent to the corresponding department and whenever they receive sufficient applications they will scrutinise and shortlist applications.
The shortlisted applications will be called for written test or interview,” he said.
The premier institute is having 235 seats in M.S. (Research programme) and in PhD around 400 seats. There is no cap in admitting PhD students, as the institute accepts students who got fellowships from various institutions like UGC and CSIR.
“The July admissions continue to be important as the GATE results will be out in March. Instead of two phases of admissions per year, we may have few more,” he added.
The access to the M.S. and PhD applications will be available from March 1 and applications received by April 2 will be considered for July 2017 admissions.
This year GATE results are expected on March 27. Candidates with B.E/B. Tech can also apply to pursue a direct PhD (M.S.+Ph.D.) in engineering after their bachelor’s degree.
