Chennai: 41 hurt fleeing from stray dog
Chennai: In yet another incident of stray dog menace, a stray dog bit pedestrians at Vidyasagar Rao Nagar near the Chengelpattu Government Hospital early on Wednesday morning.
Pedestrians began pelting stones on the dog to scare it, but to no avail. As they ran, many accidents took place, residents of the area said. Forty-one people were bitten and injured, of which, 28 (including two children) were taken to the Chengelpattu Medical College and Hospital, they added.
Those bitten include M. Devaki (48), a resident from Uthankulli, K. Kousalya (53), Vijaya Kumar (45), Lokanathan (33), Kumaresan (7) and Peter (9). They were administered injections at the hospital, sources said.
“As soon as we received the information, we alerted the five inspectors in the sanitary department and formed five teams. However, we could not find the dog,” said the Chengalpattu Municipal Manager. “We will find it by tonight and send it to the Blue Cross of India (BCI),” he added.
“Twenty-eight patients were admitted this morning. We administered the injections immediately. While some had superficial bites, some others developed fractures as they had a fall after running,” said Chengalpet Hospital Dean Dr Gunasekaran.
Rubbishing the statements made by some people on how the hospital lacked sufficient medicines and many were sent back as a result, Dr Gunasekaran said there is a sufficient stock of medicines.
Dawn Williams of BCI however expressed ignorance over the matter. “They delayed in informing us. We will find the dog by Wednesday night as they will surely kill the dog,” he said.
