M Swaraj promises more water for Trippunithura

The Choondy project with a capacity of 46 MLD is now supplying only 24 MLD.

Kochi: Parched Trippunithura will finally get sufficient drinking water in a year as the authorities are all set to start construction of a permanent check dam at Choondy on Muvattupuzha river. “The tenders will be floated in a month and the construction activities completed in a year. There will be no drinking water shortage thereafter for residents for the next decade. However, the receding water level at Muvattupuzha over the years is a concern,” said M.Swaraj MLA, who visited Choondy along with senior officials of the Kerala Water Authority.

Residents of Tripunithura and the surrounding seven panchayats are facing a severe shortage of water supply even before the summer sets in due to the receding water level at the intake well in river Muvattupuzha at Choondy. The Choondy project with a capacity of 46 MLD (million litres per day) is now supplying only 24 MLD to the areas under its distribution network of which 10 MLD is exclusively for Tripunithura.

“Though KWA officials have constructed a temporary bund near the intake point, it’s not a sustainable solution. The residents have always been complaining of irregular water supply. The pipe-laying activities for the new supply system are progressing,” he said. The MLA also said two projects are being conceived, including a long-term one, to resolve the drinking water crisis faced by the Udayamperoor residents too.
