Kerala: Cancelled Memu trains to be back in service

Daily commuters were angry after trains were suspended for track repair.

Kochi: In a relief to short distance commuters, the railways has restored all the eight MEMU services which remained suspended since December 9 last to facilitate the track maintenance works. “All the passenger/ MEMU trains will resume service as per regular schedule from December 22,” a statement said. The move to cancel the trains had angered the daily commuters and the passenger associations too strongly reacted against the cancellation of the trains on which hundreds of short-distance commuters depended on.

The railways had then cited that the decision was taken to facilitate track renewal works and the crew of the cancelled train services would be redeployed to operate the freight and ballast trains. According to sources, the railways has deployed Track Relaying Train (TRT) machines to expedite rail replacement and maintenance works from last week. “The TRT machine can lay new track for a length of upto 650 metres a day as compared to 120 metres by manual method. Train operations too can be done without interruption through the second track,” they said.
