Woman gives birth on road in Tirupati after hospital allegedly refused to admit her

Tirupati: A probe has been ordered into an incident of an expectant mother having been denied admission at the government maternity hospital here on Sunday night -- after which she delivered a baby girl on the road.

District collector Venkataramana Reddy directed the District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr U Sreehari to probe the reasons for denial of admission to the destitute woman.

According to sources, the homeless woman Kanthari gave birth to a baby girl on the road 500ft away from the maternity facility. When she collapsed due to labour pains, the locals wrapped blankets around her and assisted her in the delivery.

On learning about this, medical personnel took her and the infant to the hospital and admitted them there.

The incident sparked outrage among the public. The Telugu Desam and women welfare organisations alleged that the destitute woman wasn’t admitted to the hospital by the authorities citing the reason that she did not come with any by-stander.

TD chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu wrote about the incident on his twitter wall, criticising the government and the administration of the government maternity hospital. TD constituency in-charge Sugunamma slammed the attitude of the maternity hospital staff.

AIDWA district committee leaders submitted a representation to the superintendent of the maternity hospital, requesting her to take action and ensure that such instances do not occur in the future. The hospital authority maintained that the woman had not disclosed her address etc other than her name.

The district collector asked urban tahsildar Venkataramana to visit the hospital and conduct an inquiry. The DM&HO was also asked to probe the incident and submit a report to the collector.
