Thiruvananthapuram: ID cards for street vendors from November 1
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The City Corporation will distribute ID cards for street vendors starting November 1. Vendors who had completed police verification will be given ID cards in the coming days.
Around 20,000 street vendors including several women were identified in the city during in the state.
A state-level advisory committee was formed to implement the project under National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM). This was aimed at providing protection to street vendors and constructively regulating them.
The vendors with Aadhar card will be linked to the scheme. Minister K.T. Jaleel will distribute the ID card. Mayor V.K. Prasanth and representatives of street vendors will be present.
The NULM scheme envisages institutional credit, training and skill development for workers. The civic body will be able to regulate space and time of operation for street vendors more effectively.
The scheme will involve identify the vending zones. In each zones, representatives will be elected from among the group. Corporation officials and police officials will coordinate with the committee constituted by elected vendors.
