More protesters to join Sargasamaram
KOZHIKODE: The "censorship" on the Nadapuram Government Arts and Science College's magazine has created a wave of protests on campuses across the district, says its union. The authorities had restricted some of the writings in the magazine due to ‘anti-Centre’ content. Its principal says some of the writings were provocative and meant to inflame hatred. The KSU and MSF control the students union of the college. MSF state general secretary P.G. Navas said the creative protests would be spread to all the campuses in the state in the name of Sargasamaram, inviting artists from outside.
“They are not ready to include 18 pages of the magazine Imirichal Choodanthiri Poyachil, for the simple reason that they include words like ‘beef’, ‘dalit’ and socialism,” he told DC. However, principal Dr M. Jyothiraj dismissed all the allegations as baseless and said that there was no ban on any words.
“This is the magazine of a college and not a particular student outfit. There was disrespect towards the national emblem. Instead of the lion in the pillars of Ashoka, a cow was placed. There was over-politicisation, which was not in the interest of the college. If the criticism is not healthy, that will become a weapon in the hands of the enemy,” he said. Students held protest marches as well as cultural programmes against the clamp on their first college magazine.
