Pest attack shatters farmers in Adilabad

The extreme weather conditions are taking a toll on the farmers this kharif though the farmers were expecting good yield this time.

Adilabad: Cotton plants drop bolls after they become reddish due to pest attack and heavy rains in many places in Adilabad district.The untimely rains are affecting the crop yield in Adilabad district leaving farmers deeply worried. The untimely rains shattered the hopes of the cotton farmers as far as good yield is concerned.

The extreme weather conditions are taking a toll on the farmers this kharif though the farmers were expecting good yield this time. The bolls in their early stages are being dropped after getting withered due to extreme weather conditions.

Farmer Ramanveni Srinivas of Kumari village in Neredigonda mandal said the farmers are a disappointed a lot with the new development related to cotton crop and this is happening when the plants were fully grown and cotton bolls are taking shape.

He said everything was fine in the early days but things changed suddenly with unwanted heavy rains in Boath area in Adilabad.

Rythu Athmahatyala Nivarana Committee district president Sangepu Borranna said things would not be so bad this kharif when compared to previous seasons but the pest attack and untimely rains affect the expected high yields. The number of mandals with deficit rainfall decreased while mandals with excessive rainfall increasing in the last 10 days.

The number of deficit rainfall mandals decre-ased to one from four and excess rainfall mandals increased to eight from four while district average rainfall is 997.7 mm against the normal rainfall 951.1 mm during June 1 to September 21 of this year.
