Hyderabad: Ulema to lead movement against Uniform Civil Code

Ali Pasha said that the first meeting will be held on September 25 at Khilwat Grounds in the Old City.

Hyderabad: Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders based in Hyderabad will be launching a nationwide mass movement against the Uniform Civil Code proposed by the Centre.

The Hyderabad-based Seerat-un-Nabi Academy, which has impleaded itself as party to the petitions pending before the Supreme Court with regard to the UCC and triple talaq, is leading the initiative to build a mass movement to exert pressure on the Centre to stop it from intervening into the Muslim Personal Law.

Maintaining that UCC was nothing but direct intervention into the Muslim Personal Law, Moulana Ghulam Samdani Ali Quadri, popularly known as Ali Pasha, said that they have decided to organise four public meetings under the banner of ‘Tahaffuz-e-Shariyat Conference’ to create awareness among the people in general and Muslims in particular about the Shariah as well as the impact of the UCC on the community across the country.

“We want to enlighten the Muslim masses that Article 44 that envisages a Uniform Civil Code is only a directive principle and is not enforceable. This article, by necessary implications recognises the existence of different codes applicable to different religions in matters of personal law,” Ali Pasha said.

He said that the framers of the Constitution were fully aware of the difficulties in enforcing a Uniform Civil Code and thus refrained from interfering with the provisions of the personal laws and laid down only a directive principle.

Ali Pasha said that the first meeting will be held on September 25 at Khilwat Grounds in the Old City. The three other meetings will be held in Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

Prominent Islamic scholars and Muslim leaders from across the country, including MIM leaders Asaduddin and Akbaruddin Owaisi, former MP Allama Obaidullah Khan Azmi and others will participate in the conference here.

Ali Pasha said the Centre is duty-bound to ensure this fundamental right is protected, but when the Centre itself is trying to infringe upon it, it becomes the responsibility of religious leaders and scholars to enlighten the people.
