Bengaluru: BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad has said that if traffic police come across potholes they should inform Palike and not take up civic work themselves.
When it was brought to his notice that traffic police had repaired a road, Prasad said, “It’s been done in one place. From that you can’t say that traffic people are doing BBMP’s job. They have to inform us. We will do it,” he said.
He said, “We have floated tenders and contractors are in place. The police have to tell us. If they bring it to our notice, it will be done immediately. If a particular area has escaped our engineers’ attention, there is a mechanism to get it done. BBMP is meant for that. It’s not the work of traffic people. If no action is taken even after being informed, we will take action against the engineers concerned.”
But as the city is going through a wet spell, traffic flow gets badly hit, thanks to potholes and water logging at various parts. The traffic police often resort to spot fixes to reduce the misery of motorists.
In a recent incident near Yelachenahalli Metro station, two traffic cops, Kumar and Basavaraju, brought a hand hoe to level a massive pothole.
Traffic DCP (South) Sowmyalatha explained that during rains the traffic police at all station limits face the same issue.
“When it rains, we (traffic police) are only ones on the road. There will be water logging and if it is leading to accidents, our men will immediately do what is necessary,” she explained.
“What our staff did near Yelachenahalli Metro station was commendable and appreciated. We will reward them. However, long-term action needs to be taken by BBMP,” Sowmyalatha said.
