Urgent steps to conserve water, says CM Pinarayi Vijayan

There was 29 per cent drop in rains in the state during June 1 to August 16.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Anticipating acute water scarcity owing to insufficient rains, the state government is initiating various steps for water preservation on a war-footing basis, Chief Minister Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan said in the assembly on Monday. Giving a statement in the House, the Chief Minister said that there was 29 per cent drop in rains in the state during June 1 to August 16. If the state did not receive sufficient rains till September, there will be acute water scarcity. The major hydel power generation stations were only having 35 per cent water.

Chief Minister said that a meeting chaired by him on August 10 evaluated the situations and chalked out various measures on a war footing basis. It was decided to form three task forces for rain water conservation. Preserving rainwater and creating awareness on water misuse are the broader objectives. Promoting rain water harvesting, plugging all water leakages at government offices and public taps, cleaning of wells and water bodies and massive campaign drives were being initiated by various departments and disaster management authorities. In order to ensure water availability in forests, steps like temporary check dams were also being initiated, the Chief Minister said.
