We won't sit silent, says Church Council
Kochi: The Inter-Church Council (ICC) spokesperson George Paul has said that the Christian medical college managements cannot accept the government decision to entrust admission in management and NRI quota MBBS seats in private colleges to the Commissioner of Entrance Examinations Kerala.
“There is no reason for the government to withdraw from the agreement reached with the Christian medical college managements for seat sharing in government and management quota. If the managements had unilaterally withdrawn from the agreement this way, that wouldn’t have created a big issue. When the government does it we cannot sit silent. We will challenge it in court,” he said.
He, however, admitted that there was no immediate consequence for the managements as they are also conducting admissions in management quota based on merit as is done by the government. “Though there is no direct immediate consequence, we are not prepared to forfeit our right to conduct admissions. If we allow now government to make admissions, it will have far-reaching consequences. We cannot say what will come next. We have already received applications from 15,000 candidates. What will we tell them,” said Mr George Paul.
Mr George Paul said that this had nothing to do with minority rights. “Irrespective of minority of majority, Article 19 1 (G) of the Constitution gives the right to practise any profession, or to carry on any occupation, trade or business. This challenges that right,” he said.
