Thousands attend International Yoga Day celebrations at Malabar

Television anchor Renjini Menon inaugurated the event with a talk on yoga practice to be adopted as a lifestyle.

KOZHIKODE: It was a memorable day as thousands of people, mainly youngsters and schoolchildren, participated in mass yoga sessions at different places across Malabar on the International Yoga Day on Tuesday. Minister T.P. Ramakrishnan and legislators A. Pradeep Kumar, M.K. Muneer and A.N. Shamseer, participated in various camps.

Students of Mount Tabor English School made a colourful beginning in Wayanad district, where schoolchildren and youth made a beeline for the mass yoga camp there. The programme focused on orientation, a yoga illustration group activity and yoga practice and also highlighted the promotion of global health, harmony and peace.

Another impressive gathering was at the office of State Bank of Travancore, Koyilandy, where chief manager P. Sreenivasan and yoga master Krishna Kumar led the session for its customers.

In Kasaragod and Kannur districts, collectors E. Devadas and Bala Kiran respectively inaugurated the district level programmes and appreciated the large crowds and introduced 20 different asanas and pranayamas. District medical officer in Kasargod led a class on yoga citing its benefits. To popularise the Yoga among the next generation, schoolchildren from Kadalundi village were specially invited to NIRDESH campus for a Yoga demonstration.

Considering the request from children and adult participants, NIRDESH has decided to have a weeklong training programme from tomorrow as a sequel. This free training programme will teach asanas practised at home. It will also include breathing techniques and a lecture on healthy food habits.
