CBI court awards 2 years RI to DSP for causing loss to customs dept
Chennai: The special designated court for CBI cases has sentenced a deputy superintendent of police, Central Bureau of Investigation to undergo RI for two years on charges of abusing his power and causing loss of Rs 2 lakh to customs department.
The IX Additional special judge for CBI cases, S.Kannammal, slapped on him a fine of Rs 20,000. The anti-corruption branch, CBI, Chennai, received a complaint alleging that K.A.A.Salaam, DSP, CBI, conspired with his friends to cheat customs department in February 2011. His friends cheated the department by not declaring dutiable goods in the customs brought from abroad by evading customs duty in connivance with Salaam.
Special public prosecutor N. Baskaran, who appeared for the ACB, CBI, said the personnel conducted investigation and registered a case against Salaam, G. Vinod Kumar, Natha Venkata Vathsa Vardhan and S.M. Sadiq. Salaam abused his official position to cheat the customs department, causing a loss of '2 lakh. On completion of trial, special judge S.Kannammal convicted Salaam, Vinod Kumar, Vardhan and sentenced them to undergo RI for 2 years.
The judge imposed a fine Rs 20,000 to Salaam, and Rs 10,000 to G.Vinod Kumar and. The judge acquitted S.M. Sadiq from the charges.
