A 36-year-old pedestrian was killed on the spot when a speeding car knocked him down.

Bengaluru: A 36-year-old pedestrian was killed on the spot when a speeding car knocked him down at the infamous Kempapura junction on Monday night. The deceased, Gangadhar, was from Gowribiddanur and did odd jobs, like cooking and electrical works, the police said.

Gangadhar was crossing the Kempapura junction around 10.30 pm to catch a bus towards Gowribiddanur when the car coming towards the city from the international airport side, knocked him down. Passersby rushed him to a hospital, but he was declared brought dead. His body was later shifted to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital for postmortem. “We have seized the car and arrested the accused driver Syed Azizullah, 52, a resident of Sahakaranagar,” the police said.

In February last year, a speeding water tanker had crashed into seven people, killing two of them on the spot at Kempapura junction. One of the deceased was a 19-year-old girl. After protests by college students, civic authorities had promised to build a skywalk at the junction. But one year later, the preparatory work is still going.

In another incident, a 24-year-old motorcycle rider died on the spot when a speeding tempo crashed into his bike near the Indian Air Force (IAF) office in Yelahanka. The deceased, Chetan Babu, was an employee of a call centre with an airliner. He was a resident of Maranayakanahalli in Chikkajala and was on his way towards the city along with a friend when the accident occurred around 3 pm, the police said.

His friend and passersby shifted him to a nearby hospital where he was declared brought dead. A case of accidental death due to negligent and rash driving has been registered at the Yelahanka traffic police station and efforts are on to arrest the absconding tempo driver.
