These wildlife photographers make Exposure special

Sabari Janaki and Shabeer Thurakkal have won international accolades for their works.

Kozhikode: Exposure, the annual photography exhibition initiated by Light Source, a community of photographers, at Kerala Lalita Kala Akademi Art Gallery Kozhikode was distinctive not only in the variety displayed in its photographs but also in the contributions of two internationally and nationally recognized wildlife photographers, Sabari Janaki and Shabeer Thurakkal. Sabari has received a special mention in Sanctuary Asia International Award for 2016 while Shabeer is the recipient of the Wildlife India Photography Award instituted by Better Photography magazine for 2017.

According to Sabari, photographs especially wildlife ones happen by chance but these chances come only through hard work.

“Photography is about light and a good photographer should capture the whole light in his frame through observation,” he said. Sabari Janaki has bagged the fellowship instituted by Light Source for this year and Kerala Lalitha Kala Academy Wildlife Fellowship in 2013. Sabari, a livestock inspector by profession, is a native of Manjeri, Malappuram district. He joined the community of light source as a beginner to nurture his passion for photography.

“As a photographer I did not try to focus on any particular genre of photography but journeys with M.A Naseer, wildlife photographer, inspired me and led me to the field of wildlife photography,” said Shabeer Thurakkal. He got the Wildlife India Photography Award for the rare picture of a flying squirrel at Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary. Shabeer was with Light source since its inception.

The exhibition displays 80 photographs taken by 36 of members of Light Source and the prize winning photographs of the street photography competition conducted by it. The exhibition concluded on May 20.
