Koyilandy hospital complex ready to open

Building faced hurdles in form of non-supply of power connection and non-allotment of building number.

KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the new building complex of the Koyilandy taluk hospital on May 13 or 14, according to Koyilandy municipal chairman K. Sathyan.

The building has been facing hurdles during the last two-and-a-half-years due to the non-supply of power connection and non-allotment of building number.

These were sorted out after Health Minister K.K. Shylaja visited the hospital in February. “Everything has been set for the inauguration. Rs 50 lakh has been earmarked by the municipality for setting up wards, buying beds, cots etc.

Another Rs 80 lakhs has been provided for waste treatment plant,” explained Mr Sathyan. Rs 50 lakh has been provided from the MLA fund to construct the compound wall. Currently, it has a 159-bed capacity which will be upgraded to 200.

The hospital has signed an agreement with HLL Life Care to introduce modern equipment with thrust on gynaecology department, including a labour room. The gynaecology department had stopped functioning two decades back citing lack of infrastructure. “Further, amenities for patients and hospital equipment will be bought through sponsorship, mainly from expats and organizations,” said the municipal chairman.

According to hospital superintendent Dr K.M. Sachin Babu, a meeting of the hospital management committee convened on April 24 would announce the date of the inaugural. “The Uralungal Labour Contract Society constructed the building which has six floors. The full-fledged functioning of the hospital is expected to lessen the burden on Kozhikode medical college hospital,” he said.
