Kerala: Tragic end for girl playing with shawl
Kochi: A ten-year-old girl met with a tragic end when she got accidentally strangled while playing with a shawl at her home at Madampilli near Perumbavoor on Friday afternoon. The deceased was identified as Mahrunnisa Begham, a Class IV student and the eldest of the three daughters of Subair and Haseena of Marottikkal Parambil House at Kunnathukara. “Her mother found her gasping for breath with the shawl getting tied around her neck at 1 p.m. Though she was rushed to Karothukuzhi hospital at Aluva, the girl was declared brought dead,” police said. According to the cops, she was playing with her two younger siblings in the bedroom when the tragedy happened.
All male members of the family had gone to offer Friday prayers. “The sisters were playing with a shawl by tying one end of it to the window and wrapping the other end around their necks after standing atop a vessel. They were taking turns and when it was Mehrunnisa’s turn, the vessel seemed to have slipped away from under her feet,” said a relative of the deceased. Her mother rushed in hearing the cries of the other two children, one of whom was a three-year-old and the other, a second standard student. The shocked mother made a hue and cry as neighbours rushed in and took the girl to the hospital. The police conducted the inquest and released the body to relatives. She was laid to rest in the evening.
