Plans afoot to rev up Bekal brand

Citizens forums, hoteliers come together to promote tourism.

KOZHIKODE: Concerted efforts are on by citizens forums, hoteliers and government agencies to promote Bekal, the prominent tourism destination of Kasargod. The District Tourism Promotion Council and Lions Club have already introduced a kite festival which proved a big hit whereas prominent hotel groups have conducted a cycle rally.

Bekal Lions Club spokesperson Haroon Pallikkara told Deccan Chronicle that though the destination is well-known, it is yet to emerge as a major tourism destination. Around 500 bicycle riders, both male and female in the age group of 14-years and above took part in the race on their own bicycles conducted early this month organised by ‘The Lalit Resort and Spa, Bekal’.

Lalit Resort and Spa General manager Debashish Chandra told DC that Bekal was a good destination which has backwaters, water bodies, rivers and a virgin beach that provide maximum peace of mind.

“When you travel from Mangalore to Bekal you can see the sea on one side and the coast marked by coconut trees”, he added. “The climate also is amazing. It is exactly like Goa”, he adds.

The DTPC has already started steps for setting up the “Bekal Light and Sound Show”, a Rs 4 crore project. DTPC member secretary Nagesh Theruvath said that the installation works would start soon after the elections. “Once completed it would be a major attraction of Bekal”, he added.
