Kozhikode Corporation to resume dog sterilisation

The corporation's attempt to set up a permanent facility for dog sterilisation at Poolakadavu

KOZHIKODE: City Corporation is all set to organise the second sterilisation camp for stray dogs from May 9 at Railway colony. The week-long camp under the Animal Birth Control (ABC) project would be conducted in association with Railways. Authorities said that they are targeting to sterilise at least 50 strays during the camp.

“The mobile ambulance service of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Wayanad would be roped in for the purpose,” said Dr. K.K. Baby, the implementing officer of the project.

A similar camp was conducted at the premises of Old Corporation building last May. As many as 50 dogs were sterilised then. The keyhole surgery was the first of its kind in the state conducted according as per the guidelines of the Animal Welfare Board of India.

The corporation’s attempt to set up a permanent facility for dog sterilisation at Poolakadavu ground near Vellimadukunnu was meted with stiff resistance from local residents. Dr Baby said that someone fuelled false propaganda among the people triggering fear. “We have made it clear that strays after sterilisation would be released at the spots from where they were captured. There is no need of unwanted apprehension,” added Dr. Baby.
