Kochi to have Happy Streets' on Sundays
KOCHI: Following other cities in the country, Kochi also is implementing a weekly event when a part of the busy major roads will be dedicated exclusively to pedestrians, cyclists and other non-motorised transport (NMT) users. The programme named ‘Happy Streets’ will be on the lines of “Raahgiri,” a regular event held in more than 15 cities.
Kochi Metro is organising the event in cooperation with the district administration, city police, corporation, Greater Cochin Development Authority and Kochi Biennale Foundation. NGOs, local clubs and like-minded organisations will also be supporting the event, the first to be held on May 1 (Sunday) morning from 06.30 am to 10.30 am on Shanmugham Road. It is a great opportunity for people to reclaim the streets’ for peaceful and festive uses.
The road will be closed from both sides and create a safe zone for the public to engage in activities like walking, sports, cycling, fitness, culture and community building activities. The objective is to rebuild the relationship among people as pedestrians and cyclists with the city of Kochi and enable them to realise the quality of life with less-aggressive traffic.
