Kerala: CEE counselling must for all medical colleges

The committee cancelled all the admissions to Kannur, Karuna and KMCT medical colleges.

Thiruvananthapuram: The commissioner for entrance examinations (CEE) has decided not to allow the self-financing medical and dental colleges to conduct separate counselling process this year. They will have to admit students from the counselling process conducted by the CEE. The Supreme Court and the central government had ordered last year that the admissions to all MBBS and BDS seats should be from a common counselling process conducted by the CEE. But some self-financing medical colleges had defied the order and made admissions on their own.

Following this, the previous admission supervisory committee headed by Justice J.M. James had taken steps to recast the rank list of many colleges as the admission process was not fair and transparent. The committee cancelled all the admissions to Kannur, Karuna and KMCT medical colleges. The KMCT college later accepted the committee directive and admitted the students from the common counselling process.

Though the committee had revised the admission made by Karuna Medical College ensuring the inter se merit of the candidates after retaining the admission of 30 candidates made by the CEE during the spot admission held on October 7, the decision was later stayed by the Supreme Court. The CEE has now decided to conduct entrance examinations only for engineering courses and admit students to all medical courses, including MBBS and BDS, from the National Entrance-cum-Eligibility Test (NEET) conducted by the CBSE. The admissions to ayurveda, homoeopathy, siddha, unani, agriculture, veterinary, fisheries and forestry courses will be based on NEET(UG) 2017 conducted by the CBSE.
