Helicopters spray water to douse Mukkunnimala fire

The Government sought the support of Shanghumugham Air Force base to douse the fire.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Air Force has sprayed more than 80,000 litres of water to douse the raging fire at Mukkunnimala. Fire engines were unable o reach the destination where the fire has been causing destruction for the past three days. Water was taken from Vellayani Lake to douse the fire. According to Nemom police, 2,500 litres of water was carried in each helicopter to extinguish the fire. The Government sought the support of Shanghumugham Air Force base to douse the fire.

“There is a radar station belonging to the Air Force and a firing range of th Army. “The important station is that the radar station. There is a civilian area at Arikkada Junction where the fire broke out from cigarette butts abandoned by labourers of the granite quarry and crusher units there,” said a police officer. Three helicopters were deployed by the Air Force. Late on Tuesday evening fire started again in dry patches of the area where a fire engine belonging to Neyyatinkara fire station was deployed as a standby.
