Blood Kannur' to make donation easy
KANNUR: Blood Kannur, a collective of students from various colleges in the district, will donate blood in leading hospitals in the district. A campaign began on Friday, flagged off by Ports minister Ramachandran Kadannappally. The volunteers who are donating blood would be rewarded with a year-long medical insurance cover up to Rs 1 lakh, said the organisers, Annapoorna Charitable Trust. The oldest blood bank in Kannur, Sara Memorial blood bank came up with the mediclaim possibility after news of the blood donors, functioning voluntarily under the charitable trust spread.
Federal bank and Bajaj Allianz also came forward to support the donors, who are volunteers of various NSS units in five colleges in the district. SN College, Thottada, Government Engineering college, Kannur, Brennen College, Thalassery, WIRAS college, Pilathara and Navbharath IAS academy, have nearly 1000 student donors on the rolls of Blood Kannur. Whenever a patient or bystander needs blood, once informed, they will send their vehicles to these colleges and the donors are ready. Earlier, the group was working under Annapoorna WhatsApp groups. The Principals and NSS and NCC programme officers of these colleges were members of the groups, secretary of the trust Jofin James, said.
Every Sunday, five donors each donate at the blood banks of the Government district hospital and AKG Memorial hospital. Apart from these blood banks, whenever there is a demand, the volunteers donate at that particular hospital too. Whenever there is a need for blood in a hospital in a particular area, students from that area would go and donate blood. The donors can be reached at 9847000599 and 9072458458.
