Speedspot Kannur' spots speeding vehicles
Mobile application helps passengers to report violations

KOZHIKODE: An Android mobile application, ‘Speedspot Kannur,’ has come in handy for the passengers to report cases of speeding by buses. The Kannur district administration which launched the application in the first week of this month has received over 150 complaints. The app helps a traveller to know the speed by which the bus is running and provides the facility to report to the authorities if the bus violates the speed limits.
The users can take a snapshot indicating the speed at a particular time with location using GPS. They can also take a photo of the bus ticket and send the screenshot with some description. “The app has been widely accepted in our district”, said District Collector Mir Mohammed Ali. The app developed by the National Informatics Centre-Kannur can be downloaded from Google Playstore.
Over 1,000 people have downloaded the application and are using the facilities. This year alone, 1,432 accidents have taken place in Kannur in which 170 persons lost their lives and another 1,887 were injured. If the bus exceeds 35 km/hr within town area, or 65 km/hr on a highway, the passenger can use the app to send the information to RTO officials.
