Thiruvananthapuram: Punish erring cops, says Kodiyeri Balakrishnan
Thiruvananthapuram: CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the recent incidents indicated that some police officers were acting against the LDF government’s police policy and in violation of the Police Act. Kodiyeri demanded strict action such officers. He slammed the police for slapping draconian charges against writers and activists. “UAPA should be used only to curb terrorist activities. It has come to our notice that UAPA has been used in some other cases as well,” he pointed out.
The CPM state secretary said the case related to the youth Nadeer was registered and UAPA slapped on March 3 2016 when the UDF Government headed by Oommen Chandy was in power. “There is an urgent need to review the use of UAPA in every case especially which has nothing to do with any terror activities,” he said. The former home minister said that IPC 124A had been applied in the case against writer Kamal C. Chavara. “Slapping sedition charges in such cases would send out the wrong message to people. This cannot be allowed under the LDF Government’s tenure,” he added.
