Hyderabad Water Board scheme flops

People who are below the poverty line would be provided with connection for one rupee.

Hyderabad: The Metro Water Board scheme to detect and report illegal water connections has received no response from the people. The deadline to regularise connections ended on September 30 after which any unauthorised connection would be disconnected. The Water Board had said that if anyone reported an illegal connection, the informant would be given 25 per cent of the fine imposed on the violator.

This scheme was introduced under the Voluntary Disclosure Scheme, which lasted from August 1 to September 30, 2016. People who are below the poverty line would be provided with connection for one rupee.

A senior officer from the Water Board revenue department said, “Those who have not come forward to regularise their connections will now be dealt with sternly. The scheme ended on September 30. The scheme to reward detection is still active.”

Citizens who report illegal connections will get 25 per cent of the fine amount as incentive. Linemen would get a cash incentive of Rs 200 for every illegal connection which they report, the officer said.
