Social activist Shabnam Hashmi wary of Presidential polls

Social activist feels Sangh appointee could lead to emergency

KOZHIKODE: Social activist Shabnam Hashmi has opined that the next President Election in July 2017 would be critical in determining if India would continue as a democratic country or declare emergency as per the Sangh agenda. “If the next President is a Sangh choice, then he could review Indian Constitution and bring about threatening measures including emergency,” she said while interacting with students of Centre for Research and Education for Social Transformation (CREST) here on Tuesday.

During A.B. Vajpayee’s tenure, a Constitution Review Bill was sent to the then President K.R. Narayanan, but he didn’t budge. RSS leader Govindacharya was entrusted with reviewing our Constitution and amend it to the BJP's requirement, she said to a query. Ms Hashmi was of the opinion that all secular mind parties should join against the fascist BJP by burying their differences. "We are passing through very bad times. Uttar Pradesh election is crucial. If the BJP wins there, it would help them to have a majority in Rajya Sabha too which is crucial for the President election," she reasoned.

Speaking about CPM Politburo member Prakash Karat’s comment that Narendra Modi regime is not fascist, but authoritarian, Ms Shabnam Hashmi said that we are moving towards fascism. "India is treading the path of Germany during the Hitler regime. The NDA regime is targeting those persons who put them in the dock continuously. I had been subjected to Income-Tax query thrice," she elaborated. Speaking to this newspaper she said she was concerned that no one is addressing the issues of Muslim community which helps the radical elements in the community to roll out their agenda.
