Ramkumar death: Prisons ADGP begins probe

Chennai: Nearly 32 hours after the mysterious death of Ramkumar, the lone suspect in the murder of Infosys techie Swathi, the prison top brass conducted spot inquiries that went on late into the night on Tuesday.

The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) — Prisons, Vijay Kumar visited the Puzhal prison amd launched his probe around midnight. He inspected the Dispensary Block where Ramkumar was said to have pulled the live wire out of a switchboard with a loose top and bit into it.

Puzhal prison superintendent Anbalagan, deputy superintendent Kumaresan, jailer Jeyaraman and dispensary in-charge Dr Naveen and a few others were among those quizzed. Warden Pechimuthu, who witnessed Ramkumar electrocute himself, also figured in the list of those questioned.

The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), SP N. Baskaran, had also accompanied the probe and recorded the statements besides taking stock of the crime scene. The SHRC, earlier on Monday, took suo motu cognisance of a media report into the incident. It also directed its ADGP/Director, Investigation Division, to conduct an enquiry into the incident by a senior officer and submit a comprehensive report within two weeks time.

Sources indicated that a departmental inquiry was also being conducted into the incident. “If the departmental probe indicts anyone on procedural lapses, a recommendation will be made to the administration to take action against the particular person,” said an official source.

Tamilselvi, Judicial Magistrate from Tiruvallur, is also probing the incident since the death occurred when the inmate was in judicial custody.
