GVMC observes World Mosquito Day
Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), in association with the District Public Health and Malaria departments, organised a procession to mark the World Mosquito Day on Sunday to enlighten the community about the need to combat malaria and other seasonal diseases.
The event was flagged off by GVMC additional commissioner Yadagiri Srinivasa Rao from the Maha Visakha Municipal Corporation headquarters.
World Mosquito Day is observed globally on August 20 each year to commemorate the ground-breaking discovery of Sir Ronald Ross in 1897 that malaria is transmitted to humans through the bite of female Anopheles mosquitoes.
Speaking at the event, Srinivasa Rao underlined that around 450 malaria staff perform their duties in various wards, effectively treating diseases like dengue, malaria and chikungunya. He emphasised that GVMC has been organising awareness seminars on disease prevention, often in association with DWCRA members.
The additional commissioner encouraged citizens to actively contribute to disease prevention by raising awareness about mosquitoes, eliminating water stagnation, and adhering to practices such as Dry Friday every week to check breeding of mosquitoes.
