RBI's money container develops snag, causes flutter

The new one replaced the faulty component in the affected container, sources said.

KARUR: A container carrying a huge amount of cash from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Mysuru to RBI Thiruvananthapuram, caused flutter at a sleepy village Thagarakottagai on the busy Karur-Madurai national highway near Karur, after it screeched to a halt on the roadside on Tuesday in the wake of a mechanical snag.

The container, one of the two such vehicles that had left from Mysuru on Monday, had reached the Thagarakottagai village when one of them stopped due to a mechanical fault.

As per the routine instructions given to the drivers, if one of the vehicles halted for any reason, the other vehicle should also stop at the spot, official sources told DC.

The CISF security personnel, who escorted the containers, informed their higher-ups in Karnataka as well as the superintendent of police, Karur, Ms Nandhithe Pande. The SP in turn instructed the DSP Aravakkurichy, Ms Geethanjali, to provide adequate security to the containers till the vehicles left for their destination in Kerala.

Meanwhile, the needed spare part for the stranded container arrived from Pune to Madurai by air and the same was moved early on Wednesday to the spot where the vehicle had stopped.

The new one replaced the faulty component in the affected container, sources said. Later, around 2 pm, both the containers left for RBI Thiruvananthapuram, the sources added.
