Vijayawada: Student accused of stealing money, takes her own life

Sashi committed suicide as she was suffering from depression over not scoring good marks, say cops.

Vijayawada: An Intermediate second year student who was accused of theft by her hostel mates committed suicide on Thursday. However, police said that she was depressed by the low scores in the first year exam and that drove her to take her own life.

The victim, Gudapati Sashi, 17, a resident of Guthavaripalem, Yadlapadu mandal of Guntur district, was staying in the hostel of Vignan NIrula College in Pedapalakalur, a suburb of Guntur.

According to reports, there were disputes between the students for a few days over money missing from a bag. A few students searched Sashi’s bag and found the watch of another student. The students reported the matter to hostel warden Sushma and she assured them that she would inform the college principal on Thursday morning.

According to the students, Sashi committed suicide as she was unable to bear the suspicion of her friends. She tied her chunni around her neck and jumped from a gap in a damaged window.

She shared a room with five students in the room and they talked with her up to 11.30 pm on Wednesday. She is believed to have committed suicide after they went to sleep.

On noticing the incident on Thursday morning, the students informed the management of the college and the police about the suicide.

The police version is quite different.

According to Nallapadu sub-inspector B. Ashok, Sashi did not score well in the first year exams and that drove her into depression leading to her committing suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan in the hostel room.

He said that following the complaint lodged by her father Gudipati Siva Ramakrishna, the police has started an inquiry.

They shifted the deceased to Guntur Government Hospital for a postmortem.
