Schools observe Reading Day with fervour

The SBOA Public School remembered P .N. Pani-ker's contribution to the cause of literacy, education and library movement on the occasion.

Kochi: Schools across the state observed Reading Day on Tuesday with a variety of activities while a few kick-started the Reading Week on the occasion.

The inauguration of the Vidyarangam Kalasahityavedhi at St Antony's H.S.S Kacheripady here was graced by Mr. N. Krishnakumar, son of P. N Panicker, the father of the Library Movement in Kerala. Headmistress Beena Xavier presided. The members of PTA Babu John and Anilkumar P. T. offered felicitations.

The SBOA Public School remembered P .N. Paniker’s contribution to the cause of literacy, education and library movement on the occasion. D.R. Rajesh, secretary, Kanaya-nnoor taluk library council was the chief guest on the occasion. He pointed out how books formed the base for cementing values in society. Debate, quiz, elocution, reading competitions were held. ‘Google Guru’, a new initiative was launched by the library club on the occasion. Sreekala Karunak-aran, principal, presided. Archa Anilkumar , Bhadra S Manu and Ardra Subash gave a talk on the importance of reading.

Little Hearts School, North Paravoor, celebrated the day with fervor. The day began with a special assembly. Nancy Sebastian, chairman and managing director of the school inaugurated the function. Senior students spoke on the importance of reading and the highlight of the day was the launch of a special magazine which was the effort of students of all the classes. This magazine was handed over to Nancy Sebastian by the first teacher of Little Hearts School, Ragini. The assembly was concluded with a speech by the principal Pushpalatha P.

Reminded of author Christopher Mary ‘s words that ‘a house devoid of books is like body without soul’, the students of St. George English Medium School, Thalayolapar-ambu, visited their neighboring homes with books to spread reading habit. Principal Dr. George T.J, accompanied by Reetha V.J. led the team amid incessant rain. The campaign was the brain child of Fr. John Puthuva, the school manager

Hari Sri Vidya Nidhi School, Thrissur also celebrated ‘Reading Day’. A special skit was staged by the Class XII students. Awards were given to voracious readers. A striking pantomime was put up by the high school students, which elaborated on man’s wasteful habits. Teacher Uma recited her poem on the occasion. Principal Jaya Nagarajan, executive director Nalini Chandran and administrator Jayasr-ee Parameswaran attended the function .

St Phelomena’s Public School, Elanji also celebrated the day led by principal Fr John Ernia-kulathil.

Students and staff of Crescent Public school celebrated the day with recitation, story telling, speech and pledge. Characters from books like Harry Potter and Little Red Riding Hood came live on stage. Principal Prof. Dr. George Kolanchery stressed the selection of good books for reading.
