Yoga must be part of daily routine: Gold medal winner

This contest saw the participation of around 300 yoga practitioners from countries like Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and India.

Coimbatore: Yoga must be made part of routine instead of just practicing it on International Yoga Day alone, according to Sathiya Krishnan, city-based international yoga gold medal winner.

When practiced on a regular basis, yoga offers many benefits. A therapeutic yoga practitioner, Krishnan has the ability to perform complicated yoga asanas effortlessly.

Practice leads to perfection and this he says helped him win a gold medal at the 6th Asian Yoga Championship 2017 and Yogi Sundaram Memorial Cup that was hosted in Singapore in May this year. This contest saw the participation of around 300 yoga practitioners from countries like Australia, Malaysia, Singapore and India.

This youth from Coimbatore received an invitation to participate in this contest where he performed five yoga postures including, the purna matsyendra asana, adho mukha vrischika asana, nataraja asana, mukhottanasana and vrischika asana. He scored between eight to ten (full) marks for each of the postures.

This 24-year old youth, who participated in the 21-25 age group, was declared winner in the Yoga Athletic event.

“My father is my yoga guru. I grew up watching him practice yoga and he has trained me to perform complicated yoga postures and therapeutic yoga. I have been learning and practicing yoga since I was four years old,” Krishnan told DC.

He has made yoga a part of his routine and practices therapeutic yoga and yoga asanas for two hours every day. He also teaches yoga at city-based Amrutha Yoga Centre that was founded by Mr Bala Subramaniam, his father. The youngest student here is two-years-old while the oldest is 80-year-old.
