Kerala dalit woman couldn't bear nuisance barb'
Kannur: The dalit girl who attempted suicide late on Saturday night in Thalassery told the Kerala Women’s Commission chairperson K.C. Rosakkutty on Monday that she took the extreme step after facing humiliation. The chairperson visited Anjuna, 25, daughter of N. Rajan, Kuniyil House, Kuttimakkool, at Indira Gandhi Cooperative Hospital on Monday. Commission member advocate Noorbina Rasheed also accompanied her.
Ms Rosakkutty and Ms Noorbina took the statement from the girl in privacy. North zone ADGP Sudesh Kumar had visited Anjuna late on Sunday night. “My father and we four daughters live without creating any trouble for the others. Still, we were called public nuisance and quotation gang. Calling caste names is routine. Our father did not react to these atrocities since we are girls and there are no other male members in the family to fight back. Ours was a small mistake. We just questioned the atrocities towards the family, that too without entering the party office Still they beat my elder sister with chair,” Anjuna said.
She added that she was pained by the remarks made by district panchayat vice-president P.P. Divya and A.N. Shamseer MLA. By afternoon, Anjuna was shifted from the intensive care unit. Kannur women’s cell CI Kamalakshi recorded her statement in the evening. The statement was later handed over to Thalassery CI P.M. Manoj. Currently, the ADGP is probing the case.
Rajan requested him to register a case against Shamseer and Divya. The ADGP convened a meeting of top officials in Kannur which was atteneded by Kannur IG Dinendra Kashyap, SP Sanjay Kumar Gurudin and DySP Saju Paul. The State Commission for SC/ST P.N. Vijayakumar will visit Thalasserry on Tuesday.
Anjuna and elder sister Akhila were granted bail on Saturday in a case of attack on the DYFI leader. Following their release, there were adverse remarks by the Left leaders on TV channels and on the social media against them which allegedly forced Anjuna to attempt suicide.
