Lawyers can't go on strike or abstain from judicial works: SC

New Delhi: In a bid to amicably resolve tensions between the bar and bench and prevent lawyers’ strikes, the Supreme Court on Thursday asked all High Courts across the country to constitute grievance redressal committees (GRC).

A bench led-by Justice M.R. Shah said that lawyers cannot go on strike or abstain themselves from court work.

The top court said that if the member of the bar has any grievance or any difficulty due to procedural changes in filing/listing of the matters or any grievance relating to misbehavior of a judicial officer, then they can make a representation to GRC to ventilate their grievances.

It said that such grievances must be genuine and should not be meant to keep the pressure on any judicial officer.

The GRC will be headed by the Chief Justice and consist of two other senior Judges, one each from service and Bar, who will be nominated by the Chief Justice as well as the Advocate General, Chairman of the Bar Council of the State and President of the High Court Bar Association.

The top court suggested the constitution of similar Grievance Redressal Committees at the district and taluka level by the territorial high court.
