Shamna death: Rights panel to serve notice to hospital

The report has to be submitted before the next sitting of the rights panel on May 18.

KOCHI: The State Human Rights Commission will serve a notice on the superintendent of Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva, on the death of medical student Shamna Thasneem. Her father K.A. Abootty had complained that the private hospital authorities tried to cover up the conspiracy by admitting the girl who had already died at the Ernakulam Government Medical College. He alleged that the hospital gave bills for administering medicines on her body.

During a sitting held at Kannur on Thursday, the Commission said that after getting an explanation from the hospital, a probe by the Crime Branch would be recommended into the alleged conspiracy and cheating. The Commission also asked the medical apex board investigating medical negligence to submit its full report after its scheduled meeting on April 26. The report has to be submitted before the next sitting of the rights panel on May 18. “I am happy that Human Rights Commission, political parties and youth and cultural organisations had taken up the issue," Shamna’s father who appeared before the Commission told DC. "An action council has been formed in Kannur, and various organisations have extended their support.”
