Threatening suicide, man hangs self accidentally

TIRUPATI: Threatening his wife over a video call that he would commit suicide, a man accidentally hanged himself in Chittoor on Sunday.

The accidental suicide came to light on Monday after police registered a case and sent the body for post-mortem.

Police said Lokesh (25) is a native of Tirupattur village in Tamil Nadu, working as a mason in Chittoor. He had purchased a two-wheeler on credit but failed to pay his EMIs in time. The finance firm went to his in-laws' residence in Tirupattur on Saturday and demanded that overdue EMIs be paid. Lokesh's father-in-law got angry over this and admonished him over the phone to pay the instalments himself.

“Around 11 p.m. on Sunday, Lokesh argued with his wife in Tirupattur on a video call saying the EMIs be paid by the in-laws. Otherwise, he threatened to hang himself. He even stood on a chair, put the noose around his neck and tied the other end to the ceiling fan. While threatening his wife, he accidentally slipped and hanged himself,” a police official explained.

On receiving information, local police rushed to the spot. They shifted the body to the government hospital for autopsy and registered a case.

A police officer said they have taken up the investigation based on a complaint lodged by the wife of the deceased. After an autopsy on Tuesday, police handed over Lokesh’s body to his family for last rites.
