Biocon's hostel for women at Bengaluru

The hostel will provide accommodation for women from weaker sections of society undergoing vocational training.

Bengaluru: Industries Minister R.V. Deshpande and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Founder, Biocon Foundation, inaugurated a hostel for women at Haliyal in Uttara Kannada on Monday.

The hostel, built at a cost of Rs 1 crore offered by the Foundation, will provide accommodation for women from weaker sections of society undergoing vocational training at the Canara Bank Deshpande Rural Self-Employment Training Institute.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Deshpande lauded the Foundation for supporting the hostel project. Ms Mazumdar-Shaw said: "This initiative builds on the Foundation's efforts to empower women through skill development."

She hailed the Institute for its contribution to the development of Uttara Kannada region. The institute, sponsored by V.R. Deshpande Memorial Trust and Canara Bank, offers 60 vocational training courses for poor women to help them take up self-employment.
