Chennai: Five killed, three hurt in three different road accidents
Chennai: Five people were killed and three others injured in three different road accidents at Kancheepuram and Chennai on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
According to the police, S. Vignesh (19), B. Prathapan (18), from Irumbuliyur and their friend B. Harikrishnan (20), from Anna Sathya Nagar in Adyar were riding pillion on Vignesh’s two-wheeler. Vignesh and Prathapan were pursuing BBA first year at a private college in Manimangalam and Harikrishnan was a student of a private art and science college in Shollinganallur.
“The trio were returning home after attending a function in Somangalam at 9.30 pm. When they were near Ettaiyapuram, Vignesh who was driving the bike overtook a car and collided head-on with another bike coming from the opposite direction,” said a police officer.
The riders of the other bike, D. Sanjay Kumar (19) and his brother D. Sathishkumar (17) of Somangalam — who were returning after distributing invitations for their friend’s wedding — sustained serious injuries.
Prathapan died on the spot and Vignesh was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Harikrishnan sustained major injuries.
The police said none of the five teenagers were wearing helmets and Vignesh did not have a licence to drive the two-wheeler. The Somangalam police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
Similarly, in another accident, two boys died after their speeding bike rammed into a lamp post on Dr Guruswamy Bridge in Chetpet on Saturday night.
The deceased were identified as U Abhishek (19) and A. Akash (18) of Pullapuram in Kilpauk. Sources said, the duo had completed class 12 and were working part-time in a bakery.
“The accident happened when the duo was returning home on their friend’s bike after having dinner at an eatery in Chetpet. When they turned left on Dr Guruswamy Road, they rammed into a lamp post. Abhishek, who was riding the bike died on the spot, his body was sent to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Akash, who was rushed to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital, died within minutes,” a police officer said. Pondy Bazaar traffic investigation police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
In another incident, a 36-year-old man who was returning home after buying meat on Sunday morning was killed after an MTC bus ran him over. The deceased G. Manikandan (36) of Polichalur had been working as a mechanic at a private firm in Thirumudivakkam.
According to the police, the incident took place at 9.30 am on the Pozhichalur main road and an MTC bus route No M52 plying between Pozhichalur and Hasthinapuram knocked down his two-wheeler and ran him over. Manikandan died on the spot and his body was sent to the Chromepet Government Hospital for post-mortem.
The Chromepet traffic investigation police registered a case and arrested the MTC bus driver V. Balakrishnan (46) of Chengalpattu. Further investigations are on.
