Elevated nostalgiargasm at Velvet

Does “elevated nostalgia” sound like a fancy highbrow term? Step into Velvet Pattisserie to see what it actually means.

After winning hearts of Hyderabadis with their custom-made cakes for seven years, Velvet Pattisserie has now thrown its doors open to food and coffee lovers in the twin cities with some innovative options.

Sailaja spins magic with her Le Cordon Bleu experience. As for the menu, it certainly lives up to their motto of giving customers a sense of 'elevated nostalgia'. Or Nostalgiargasm, an orgasm with an explosion of waves of tastes and flavours for your tastebuds.

Velvet Pattisserie and Cafe sits ensconced in the quiet surroundings of Banjara Hills, only a few minutes away from the busy street.

We are open, says the board with a beautiful artwork by the promoter's daughter, throwing a warm welcome to guests. The decor gives you the feel of having entered a coffee shop somewhere in Europe. Not too over the top or subdued either. But the wall art across the cafe stands out and gives the guests a cozy feeling.

For those who love outdoors, there's a beautiful seating place on the terrace with greenery all around. So, Velvet has won half the battle with their instagrammable ambience. Does their food menu satiate the appetite of the city's food lovers? Let's find out.

Well, options are straight off a King’s Table. But let me tell you what's their biggest USP--the sweet and Savory butter board, which comes with butter in several refreshing flavours.

Those with a sweet tooth could try strawberry, orange honey cranberry, espresso caramel and poppy seed lemon. My favourite among the sweet butter was definitely espresso caramel given that I am a coffee lover!

The Savory butter variants include Siracha sesame, red wine and capers, truffle mushroom, roasted garlic and sundried tomato butter. And each of these has a distinct taste. And they go very well with some freshly baked bread sticks. For those who are watching their carbs and weighing scales, they also have a low carb butter board.

Don't miss the French onion soup with melted Gruyere cheese which is just out of the world. The minestrone soup was good too.

In starters, the cheese balls gets a Brazilian twist and who would have thought the highly nutritious amaranth leaves could be a great starter. The puffed amaranth broccoli is a must try. Fried devilled eggs, orange chicken wings (their Specialty) and Cajun spiced fish are other options.

For salad lovers, there are the crunchy House Ceasar and quinoa options. I loved their fusion food experiment in kimchi Mac and Cheese and Katsu Curry Maggi. Their twist to the signature Bombay Masala sandwich is unique.

For quick bites, there are some interesting variety of puffs and pies including mushroom and onion pie, paneer puff among others. The bun gets a touch of butter chicken while their egg puff gets a ulavacharu twist.

And wait, it's not over yet. Wait till I tell you about the Sabudana waffle. It's a must try there along with their irresistible secret homemade sauces. Of course, they have the usual Belgian waffle too.

In beverages, you could either pick coffee or choose from one of Velvet signature special coolers, including zesty cane americano, cocoa quencher, Jasmine peace ice tea (a welcome change from the usual hot variety), taro bubble tea among others.

The dessert offerings at Velvet Pattisserie and Cafe include hot chocolate, softy (talk of elevated nostalgia).

In all, Velvet Pattisserie and Cafe stands apart with their innovative menu which excludes the oft-repeated food options, and the icing on top is certainly the instagrammable spots in the cafe. Whether it's a coffee date, Sunday breakfast on Sundays or even relaxed lunch with families, Velvet Pattisserie and Cafe is a place worth visiting.
