AP-Genco commissions new 800 MW thermal unit

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (AP-Genco) successfully commissioned its new supercritical 800 MW unit at the Dr. Narla Tata Rao Thermal Power Station (NTTPS) in Ibrahimpatnam of Vijayawada on Wednesday.

This signifies readiness for commercial production of generating up to 19.20 MU/day, equivalent to almost 10% of total current demand in AP. The additional unit will enable AP-Genco to meet over 50 per cent of its grid demand.
Speaking on the occasion, energy minister Peddireddi Ramachandra Reddy said commissioning of the unit will bolster the state’s capacity to provide reliable and affordable electricity to every consumer in the state.

Special chief secretary and AP-Genco chairman K. Vijayanand emphasised that the future of AP lies in sustainability and AP-Genco is actively working towards reducing emissions.

AP-Genco managing director K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu said the new unit is designed to operate with washed coal having a GCV of 4,200 Kcal / kg, unlike other 800 MW units that required imported coal for blending. It is designed to operate with zero liquid discharge and 100 per cent ash water recovery system.

Chakradhar Babu said with a capacity addition of 800 MW, the thermal capacity of AP-Genco and APPDCL has increased from 5,810 MW to 6,610 MW, which supports more than 50 per cent of the state power demand. He thanked Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy and state government for the unwavering support in commissioning the new unit.
