Kerala moots NRK pension scheme

High-level panel formed to formulate plan.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state government has initiated steps to formulate a scheme for pension as well as jobs for the dependents of NRKs who die while in service. A high-level committee headed by NORKA principal secretary has been constituted to formulate a scheme by getting opinions of experts in various sectors. The plan is to offer a monthly pension on the lines of widow pension, but it will be a reasonably higher amount depending upon social conditions, to the spouse of NRKs who die while in service. This apart, jobs could be given to dependents of NRKs who hail from a weak financial backgrounds.

Government sources said that NORKA-Roots had proposed the fresh schemes to the government. The government decided to seek the opinion of experts from sectors like social security, finance and NRKs to formulate the scheme at the earliest. At present NORKA-Roots has the 'Santhwana' scheme to provide financial assistance of Rs. 1 lakh to dependents of NRKs who die while in service. But it often takes several months to get the funds sanctioned.

Hence NORKA-Roots had even proposed to make it online so that the delay could be reduced. Senior officials of finance and industries departments, the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Pravasi Welfare Board, NORKA-Roots and Technopark chief executive officers are the members of the committee formed by the government to formulate the scheme.
