Kerala: GPS must in buses from April 1 next year

The GPS-based tracking system is a combination of hardware, software and communication technologies.

Kochi: The Vehicle Tracking Project under which 16,000 private buses among other vehicles will be fitted with GPS and CCTV cameras, will be implemented from April 1 and the state government has issued an order in this regard. “The deadline for vehicles to get equipped with the devices has been fixed as per the GO issued on Wednesday. Besides the private buses, the KSRTC too should equip its buses with GPS. Fitness certificates will be issued only for those vehicles having the GPS devices,” a senior MVD official said.

Upon implementation, the department could detect various offences such as overspeeding, tinkering with speed governors, live monitoring of vehicles and facilitating probe on mishaps among others. The GPS-based tracking system is a combination of hardware, software and communication technologies. A software system receives live data from VTU fitted on vehicles.

The data is further processed to generate automated alerts and messages. A mapping system is integrated to the software for real-time plotting of the vehicles on a map. “The live data can be accessed at the master control room in Thiruvananthapuram and also at monitoring centres in all district headquarters and zonal MVD offices. The owners themselves have to fit the VTU which will cost nearly Rs 6000,” an MVD official in charge said.
