Coimbatore: Real estate firms draw flak for misuse

The Housing for All' scheme is to promote affordable housing for weaker sections with subsidy from the State and Central governments.

Coimbatore: Some real estate companies in Coimbatore district are misusing the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Housing for all) scheme in their advertisements.

These companies dish out false promises that if customers buy homes from them, they will get Rs 2.1 lakh financial assistance from the Central and State governments.

The ‘Housing for All’ scheme is to promote affordable housing for weaker sections with subsidy from the State and Central governments. The Union government has selected 100 cities, including Coimbatore, for the scheme.
Corporation officials have begun surveying to identify beneficiaries from 100 wards in the city, especially from urban slum areas. Each beneficiary will get one-time financial assistance of Rs 2.1 lakh for a 323 square feet (carpet area) house.

Meanwhile, some real estate companies are telecasting advertisements in local channels in the district that if customers buy a home in their companies, they will get a subsidy of Rs 2.1 lakh from the Central and State governments with the help of the city corporation administration. When contacted, a senior corporation officer who coordinates the scheme said, “real estate companies and brokers have no role to play in the scheme.”
