Probe Dalit scholar's suicide bid: Students union of the University of Hyderabad
Hyderabad: Students union of the University of Hyderabad on Saturday staged a protest on the campus against the suicide attempt by a second year Ph.D student of the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM) on Friday.
While the university officials said that the Ph.D student tendered an apology for the suicide attempt, the students union alleged that the PhD student was discriminated against by his supervisor. The protesters demanded that an inquiry be conducted into the issue to unearth the facts so that appropriate action is taken.
The students union also said that the anti-discrimination cell in the university needed to function effectively. The protesters said that the Thorat Committee report be implemented so that discrimination on the campus is a thing of the past.
In 2013, Madari Venkatesh, a Dalit scholar who was also pursuing Ph.D in ACRHEM, had committed suicide.
