Kerala: Test to find if 12-year-old is dad

Juvenile accused of impregnating 17-year-old gives consent for test.

Kochi: A juvenile court has permitted the police to conduct a DNA test on 12-year-old boy who allegedly impregnated a 17-year-old girl. Principal juvenile magistrate, Ernakulam, passed the order after Kalamassery police moved the court seeking DNA profiling of the boy. The police had earlier produced the consent letter of the boy, who is living along with his parents, for the same. According to the Kalamassery CI S. Jayakrishnan, “the court accepted our plea and asked the medical officer to collect the boy’s blood sample and send it to the investigating officer.”

The court stressed on the importance of properly identifying the boy before going ahead with the collection of samples. It also permitted the cops to collect the samples of both the parties involved in the case. “After getting the samples from the medical officer we will send them to a forensic science laboratory for DNA profiling,” the CI said. They are yet to produce the boy, before the medical officer.

The police expect the results to be out in two months. The state Human Rights Commission had suo motu registered a case in connection with the alleged incident of the boy becoming a father. The commission asked a DySP-rank officer to conduct a probe to find out whether the claim made by the girl, who gave birth to a child at a private hospital, that she was impregnated by the boy was true.
