Ejipura's angel of hope dies

Mayor visits, announces Rs 5 lakh for next of kin

BENGALURU: On Monday, when the city reeled from the horrendous scenes of dead bodies being retrieved from under the rubble of a building in Ejipura which collapsed in a cylinder blast, the only sight which brought cheer, was that of a fireman carrying three-year-old Sanjana out of the debris, looking dazed but alive, to safety as those around cheered him.

She had miraculously survived the building collapse in Ejipura, that took the lives of her young parents, and five other occupants. Shielded by a cupboard that took the weight of the debris, Sanjana was pulled out from under the concrete and rubble , and rushed to a hospital even as the city prayed for her recovery. On Thursday early evening, that hope died and despair set in when the orphaned toddler, who had suffered burn injuries and was battling for life at the Victoria Hospital ICU, died of multiple organ failure.

“She succumbed to organ failure as a result of the burns she suffered. The child was brought into the hospital with more than 60 per cent burns and was already in a serious condition. Despite our attempts to resuscitate her, we lost her," said Dr Satish H.S., Medical Superintendent, Victoria Hospital. Sanjana’s funeral will take place on Friday.
