104 now assisting expecting moms
Chennai: Mindful of the fact that a bond must exist between a mother and a newborn, Sanjana P. (name changed), a first-time mother, was confident that something had gone awry in her pregnancy, as she wasn’t developing any affinity towards her child.
Concerned, she reached out to 104 helpline for support. “I was told that it was likely a symptom of postpartum depression and was advised to consult a physician for treatment,” she said.
The 104 helpline, mostly known for providing psychological counselling, has branched out towards helping pregnant mothers as well. “Pregnant women from across the state, who want to obtain advice from a specialist, could call the helpline and get in touch with one,” said Prabhudoss B, head, marketing and hospital relations, GVK EMRI, which operates the 104 helpline
With antenatal mothers, in rural areas, visiting public health centres (PHCs) for checkups, receiving treatment or advice from specialists may be lacking. The helpline, therefore, provides them with a platform to reach a specialist and seek advice.
“Women in rural areas generally prefer to go to a pujari for help. It is a traditional style of addressing problems that come their way. The helpline, on the other hand, helps these women move through an evidence based scientific practice,” added Prabhudoss.
Once registered, the mothers can also make follow up calls. The health advice is supplied to them by trained paramedics, physicians and specialists - like paediatricians and gynaecologists.
“Women undergo some amount of depression during pregnancy and post delivery as well . Our counsellors provide psychological counselling, and in the case of first-time pregnant mothers, the counsellors help them rid themselves of the fear of bearing a child,” said Prabhudoss.
The helpline also provides information about the nearest government hospitals, diagnostic centres and Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care centres (CEmONC). It also enlightens them on the availability of blood banks, neonatal care and several welfare schemes of the government and the prospects of getting it.
“A pregnant woman can seek advice on the necessary steps she should need during the three trimesters, the different treatment options available and advice about nutrition and vaccination as well,” said Prabhudoss.
