CPI, AIYF siege police station for leader's release

The CPI and AIYF activists sieged the police station demanding the release of the leader who was taken into custody in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Kollam: CPI constituency secretary Liju Jamal, who was arrested by the Punalur police after the ‘Modi punch challenge’ that turned violent the other day, was remanded in judicial custody for 14 days.

The CPI and AIYF activists sieged the police station demanding the release of the leader who was taken into custody in the wee hours of Wednesday. A 12-hour hartal called by the activists in Punalur constituency was complete. Following the protests, the police has withdrawn murder charges against the leader but charged him with non-bailable sections for assaulting and obstructing official duty of the police.

Punalur CI Binu Varghese was injured in a tussle between the AIYF and CPI activists. The latter had conducted the challenge at RJ Junction in Kulathupuaha inviting the public to hit a punching bag with the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi pasted on it.

The BJP activists staged a counter protest which eventually led to a clash between both the parties.
